The Texas Freedom Colonies Project’s mission is to locate unmapped freedom colonies, preserve their socio-economic and cultural assets, and support their descendants’ efforts to preserve their own communities. We are proud to announce the receipt of a grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA/NIFA) and The Southern Extension Risk Management Education Center (SERMEC) that will enable us to fulfill that mission in new ways. In partnership with The Landowners Association of Texas (LAT) and Texas A&M School of Law, we will provide train the trainer workshops on land retention strategies and estate planning, administer a needs assessment to landowners and farmers of color in several rural Texas counties, and map more freedom colonies in the process!. We are excited about the opportunity to help bring resources and visibility to low to moderate-income, undeserved farmers, and landowners!
