Community History: Pleasant Hill is just north of Woods. Pleasant Hill CME Church was established in 1917. Pleasant Hill Cemetery is adjacent to the church to the east and has over 300 burials.

The first Black commissioner of Carthage, James H. Wall Sr., attended Pleasant Hill School “in Woods Community” and was later head teacher at that school until it was consolidated with New Salem School in Shady Grove into Southside in 1955.
