Public History: “Cedar Grove community a few miles north of Lufkin is anchored by Memorial Chapel CME Church (established 1883) and Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church (established 1869). The Cedar Grove Cemetery is adjacent to Memorial Chapel and has over 3,000 burials. A two-teacher Rosenwald School was constructed in 1925-26.
I.D. Henderson, Jr. was the first Black County Commissioner of Angelina County, Texas. He served in that position from the early 1980s until the early 2000s. He recalls in an oral history interview serving the all black community of Cedar Grove and helping to improve the infrastructure of the community, which did not have the same level of infrastructure as white neighboring areas.”
