Community History: “History: Piney, or Piney Creek was founded by Joseph Morgan. Tradition says he lived in a cave for years after emancipation until able to build his own dwelling. This settlement was a mix of African American and Caucasian by the early 1940s. After being subsumed by the Army training post, Piney’s residents moved to other communities and to cities. Some moved across Highway 95 to what is now the small settlement of Sayersville. Pleasant Hill Church moved there, and the church, with its associated cemetery, is still active and in use by the community.
