Community History: The site of what I believe to be Queen’s Chapel AME was discovered in late October 2021 while underbrush was being cleared on a large industrial site that belongs to the Bryan / Brazos County Economic Development Foundation. The equipment operator noticed a headstone protruding from the ground and halted clearing. The headstone is for Carrie Foster, who died in 1885. There is evidence of other graves in the area. The extent of burials is unknown. Census records suggest a substantial number of African Americans lived in the area. Queen’s Chapel AME included a school, occasionally called “Quinn Chapel”. It also served as a polling place and was mentioned in a number of references between the 1880s and 1937. The family who owned the land out of which an acre was dedicated to the church in 1894, purchased the surrounding acreage in 1870. Caesar Cramer, the owner of the property, appears to have been an active AME pastor in Bryan as well as rural Brazos County between the late 1860s and his death about 1894.

Very little research has been done to discover the extent of the Queen’s Chapel Community.
