Community History: Birch Creek Freedom Colony is a settlement in Somerville, Texas. This freedom colony is associated with Somerville, and known as Centerline. Birch Creek is also known as Big Creek and is home to Sweethome Church. Sweethome Baptist Church is known to have served a network for Black communities in and surrounding Somerville. Sweethome Cemetery is located on the same property as Sweethome Baptist Church. The cemetery is also known as Centerline Cemetery, Birch Creek Cemetery, and Fort Lauderdale Cemetery as a result the cemetery being relocated from its former location to build Somerville Lake. The relocation of the cemetery combined two cemeteries.
