Community History: The community was called Green Chapel, and I’m not sure when it started. The community church is Brisby Chapel church off US 79 west of Jacksonville. The church was founded Dec. 11, 1881. Per county records was deed the land by a Corbin Brisby and wife, who bought his land in 1874. Some of the founding families were the Brisby’s, Tony Green’s family, my grandfather, the Adams family, Russell family, and Franklin family, along with others who branched out or married into these families. Brisby Chapel AME is still in existence with two main families still worshiping there on the 1st and 3rd Sundays. I remember the Rosenwald school, of Iron Hill, but we called it Green Chapel school. They consolidated the school with Jacksonville ISD in the 1950’s. Most of the families out there, deep in the woods, farmed and raised chickens, hogs, cows, and when I came along there was only one person with a Dial phone–my cousin Agnes Russell. Only two families still live in the area.
