Community History: According to Pearl Taylor Vanderbilt on Rootsweb, “Zion Rock Cemetery is what remains from a church that once sat adjacent to the graveyard. Zion Rock Church itself was moved from the spot on which it was built in 1893 and resettled, piece by piece, in the town of Highbank proper just down the road. Unofficial church historian, Ernestine Lynn Evans, says there was a break among the existing parishioners and so a second church was erected on the same site. Hence the reference to the cemetery sometimes being called “Old Zion Rock”. Because the land the church sat on at one time may have appeared to be on a small rise, the site is also referred to as “Zion Rock On the Hill”. The two church groups eventually reconciled into a single congregation and over time only Zion Rock Cemetery was left to stand alone.”
The cemetery does not have a sign – it appears on current maps as Zion Rock Cemetery, appears on older maps (for example, 1964 USGS Reagan Quadrangle) as Washington Cemetery.
