Public History: The roots of the Settlement date back to 1864 when it was a labor containment camp. Many of the initial settlers had worked for George Washington Butler as cowboys. William Jefferson Jones set aside 320 acres of land and divided it into tracts and sold it to emancipated slaves. Founded in 1867, and in 1870 Reverend Israel Campbell founded the Greater Bell Zion Baptist Church. Katie Bell was the first schoolteacher.
