Public History: Also called Ottine. Canoe Creek is filled with several anchor institutions such as churches and schools. Residents also set aside space for Black cemeteries. There was a Colored Graveyard Association, the McKeller Cemetery. Other parts of this community were within DeWitt’s Colony, which was a white land grant surveyed in 1825 by James Kerr. The Black residents created the Little Hill Baptist Church Fm Road 1528 Gonzales, TX 78629
