Public History: In 1891, the Reverend H. Sinclair, with the assistance of A.T. Mathis, I.R. McPherson, and C. Sadberry, organized this church in the Mount Pilgrim Addition at Goliad. Mount Pilgrim was sponsored by its mother church, Providence Baptist Church of Gonzales. Its mission was to serve the people of the Mount Pilgrim Addition. The name Mount Pilgrim was given to the church because of the name of the community in which it was organized.

The first church service was conducted in the Colored School house, located on Bates Street in the “outer town” of Gonzales. Professor Jack Potter and his wife, Virginia Potter, were the first teachers there. On December 13, 1902, and later in 1911, lots 23 and 24, Kings Second Addition, were purchased by Trustees A.T. Matthews, C. Sadberry, and other members for a building site. Following the purchase of the building site, the Reverend Upton Price was called to provide spiritual leadership for the congregation.
