Public History: Though “Freedom Colonies: Independent Black Texans in the Time of Jim Crow” lists Nash Creek settlement in Gonzales County, community anchors New Birth Baptist Church and Nash Creek cemeteries are just over the county line in Guadalupe County.

Community History: Pearlie B. Nelson (1918-2005) attended school in the Hood’s Point Community in Gonzales County and went to church at Nash Creek New Birth Baptist Church. Her mother, Edmonia Miller, is buried in one of the two Nash Creek cemeteries just north of New Birth Baptist Church. A 1925 map notes the church as Nash Creek Baptist Church.
