Community History: The anchor of this community is Independent Baptist Church. According to Sitton and Conrad’s “Freedom Colonies: Independent Black Texans in the Time of Jim Crow,” Sand Field’s pioneer families once had been bondsmen of Reilly Springs’ whites, and many of their family names were the same.

Sandifer School in the community was a two-teacher Rosenwald School, built 1930-1931. In 1960, Sandifer Elementary School had two teachers instructing 38 students in grades one through eight, according to an article in the Daily News-Telegram about an accreditation visit. High school students went to school in Sulphur Springs.

The cemetery is known in some sources as Independence Baptist Church Cemetery or Sandifer Cemetery.
