Public History: Webb Chapel is five miles northeast of Groesbeck in east central Limestone County. It grew up around a black school and Primitive Baptist church. A school, a church, and several scattered houses marked the community on county highway maps in the late 1940s. The Webb Chapel church and cemetery were all that appeared on maps of the area in the late 1980s.
Community History: From A Family History of Limestone County (1986) page 17-18:
“Webb Chapel Primitive Baptist Church was built at the present location, five miles east of Groesbeck, in the Webb’s Chapel Community, in 1887, on land donated by the late Mr. Anderson Webb and wife, Mitty Webb.
“Leadership was the late Rev. Walter Clemmons, Deacons Ty Willis, Anderson Webb, Mose Jones, Sam Jones, Willie Tucker Sr., Joe L. Waters, Jack Jones, and Elbert Tatum Sr. Present deacons [1986] are K. S. Tatum and Jessie Harris Sr.
“Mothers were Margaret Willis, Mitty Webb, Matilda Burris, Sarah Tatum, Mary B. Jones, Mary J. Webb, Carrie Kirvin Webb, Jennie Jones, Rebecca Tucker, Willie M. Tatum, Rosia Waters, and Carrie Jackson. Present Mothers [1986] are B. Ethel Thomas Tatum, Sarah Tatum, Idell Milus, Mary Taylor, Bessie Jones, and Deaconess Willie Harris.
“Past pastors were Rev. George Jackson, Sam Britt, W. Thomas, E. L. Levingston, C. C. Collins, and I. L. Henderson for thirty-two consecutive years. Present pastor [1986] is Rev. B. T. Jones and wife, Mother Inez Jones.”
