According to Clyde McQueen’s book “”Black Churches in Texas: A Guide to Historic Congregations”” the history of Cox’s Providence AME Church is: “”In 1858, Father Stephen Young established this church in Cox’s Providence. Father of the late Bishop C.B. Young and evidently a circuit riding missionary preacher, he was assigned to Central Texas to establish church congregations where a need existed. Suffering from outmigration, this congregation had dwindled to a few worshippers. This old building was built in 1941 by contractor J.M. Nelson and S.W. Whitehead was pastor. Weather and lack of maintenance have almost destroyed the old building. It soon will disappear from the scene. This is the oldest black church in Milam County.”” McQueen cites an interview with Shirley Young in February 1989. In January 2022, the building was still standing though decay was evident.

White Oak Ridge Church was another church in the community mentioned in the African American newspaper The Dallas Express. One article states it is Baptist. The parcel is owned by the church but the building is no longer standing.

The Cox’s Providence School was mentioned in several newspaper accounts, especially about the Interscholastic Meet for Colored Schools of Milam County. A parcel in the community is still owned by the school but the building is no longer standing.

The community had a masonic lodge. Several gravestones in the Coxes Providence Community Cemetery have masonic symbols. An article from 1956 features the Heroines of Jericho campaign to raise money for a new lodge, stating the previous lodge was destroyed by a tornado on April 30, 1954.
