Public History: Jamestown, on Farm Road 1012 seventy-five miles northeast of Beaumont in western Newton County, in 1911 received a post office, named for longtime resident, merchant, and first postmaster James W. Westbrook. Jamestown’s population consisted largely of timber workers, farmers, and stock raisers. Its post office was discontinued after 1930, and its population, estimated at fifty in the mid-1930s, peaked during the 1960s at 130. In 1990 it was estimated at seventy, where it remained in 2000.

Community History: Jamestown is a freedom colony in Newton County, Texas. It is located on Farm Road 1012. In 1911, it was given a post office that was named after James W. Westbrook. The colony’s population increased from the early 1900’s to the 1960’s (where it was estimated to be about 130) , when it began to steadily decline. This site provides three collections in honor of the Jamestown Pine Hill Community, one for a homecoming celebration in 2015, one for the historic cemetery, and one with oral history materials. Jamestown Pine Hill Homecoming: The community still gathers for annual homecomings, and this collection provides videos, photographs, and descriptions of those events,, including the Saturday and Sunday services. Jamestown Pine Hill Cemetery: The community maintains the local historic cemetery grave stones and this collection includes photographs of the site. Descendant Interview: One of the Jamestown Pine Hill community’s descendants agreed to an interview about the people and events of the area, which is available in audio format, with accompanying notes.
