Public History: Darden is on U.S. Highway 287 seventy-five miles northwest of Beaumont in northeastern Polk County. The area is in the densely forested regions of the Big Thicket. Darden was east of a Carter Lumber Company tram railroad that extended east from nearby Camden. In 1966 the largely black community had a population of seventy-five, most of whom were engaged in farming, ranching, and lumbering. The 1984 county highway map showed Darden with a church, cemetery, school, and business.
