Community History: New Canaan Baptist Church is an African American congregation in Blackjack, at the intersection of FM 346 and Black Jack Road. New Canaan Cemetery, also known as Blackjack Cemetery, has hundreds of burials, the earliest recorded from 1905. A 1937 map shows the Blackjack School just south of the New Canaan church. A 1929 report on athletics in The Tyler Journal notes Blackjack as a “Colored School.
