Community History: According to Clyde McQueen’s “Black Churches in Texas: A Guide to Historic Congregations,” Mount Scilla Baptist Church in Hudging’s “Cut Off” was founded in 1876. “The Revered P.H. Moore was pastor. On May 2, 1954, a church cornerstone was laid, under the leadership of Rev. J. Allen Perry and Deacons A. Fisher, U. Craddock, D.V. Gallis, H. Palmer, W.L.Pines, and T.C. Smith. Trustees were Bob Douglas, J.L. Howe, G. Roberts, and A.B. Brooks, church clerk. In 1993, M.S. Dickens served as pastor.” Adjacent to the church is the Mt. Scilla Church Cemetery.
