Community History: “the polley family lived near sutherland springs on the cibolo not near lavernia so the freed mans colony formed from their land was not doseido colony. I have been to doseido colony and it is not near the cibolo. All that remains on the site is a cemetery badly in need of maintainance and restoration. It is completely overgrown. There was another colony by lavernia called the lavernia colony but I have not found the site yet., In my research I ran across the fact that both Mr. Polley and Mr Houston, a neighboring slave holder, gave their slaves land along the Cibolo Creek after the Civil War. One of the slaves was Cato Morgan. I actually found his obituary at the Briscoe Center, probably written by J. B. Polley, the son of the plantation owner. There was a town nearby called the Dosido Community in LaVernia, but I don’t know if these two communities were related. Do you know anything about the Dosedo Community or a black settlement along the Cibolo Creek in Wilson County?, From Wilson County History:

In 1875 the community had a school and church both built out of hand-split logs, and filled with furniture handmade from logs. H. C. Abrams was the school teacher and he was paid $50 a month. With the growth of nearby La Vernia, Adkins, and Lone Oak, and after being bypassed by the railroad and major highways the community declined. All that remains now on the site of the settlement is the Doseido Colony Cemetery, which is partially overgrown by brush, and has many marked and unmarked graves.
